2nd Half Momentum Sends Rebels To Nationals

The Rebels’ second half of the regular season was a short one.  The boys returned in mid January to take on rivals Mississippi State.  Ole Miss took both games from the Bulldogs with scores of 17-1 and 20-0.  The following weekend, the Rebels faced off against SEC opponent, The University of Alabama.  Friday’s game needed extra time, and eventually a ten round shootout.  The Tide came out on top with a 4-3 win.  Alabama walked away with a 3-0 win over the Rebels in game 2.  The regular season ended with a trip to Columbus, GA where Ole Miss played Auburn University.  The Rebels battled against the Tigers in the first game a squeaked out a 3-2 win.  The following night, Ole Miss breezed by Auburn with a final of 10-1.

Post-season play began on January 15, when Ole Miss qualified for the ACHA Division 3 South Regional Tournament.  The top two teams from the tournament would join Kennesaw State and University of Central Florida in the National Tournament.  The #7 Rebels played their first game against #6 Loyola.  In 2011, Ole Miss was defeated in the first round of regionals by Loyola with a score of 11-1.  The Rebels flipped the script this year and defeated the Hounds 5-4.  Ole Miss would then punch their ticket to nationals after an exciting 6-5 overtime victory over Florida Gulf Coast the following day.  Freshman Dan Warnecke recorded 4 goals, including the overtime winner.  Nationals will be held in Springfield, MO March 12th  thru the 16th.

This week, the Rebels prepare for the 2013 SECHC Tournament in Huntsville, Ala.  Ole Miss,who is the 3 seed from west, will take on east 2 seed, The University of Florida in Friday’s first round action.
