(East Lansing, Mich.) The Rebels arrived in Michigan looking to make a statement in the ACHA. Ole Miss first took on Michigan State University on Friday night. The Rebels came out strong, with a quick goal from Leo Cuzin. The Spartans answered back halfway through the period and later took the lead at the end of the first. The second and third period were controlled by the Spartans, netting two goals in the second and four in the third. Ole Miss suffered their first loss in the Civil War Showcase by a score of 8-2.
The next afternoon, Ole Miss faced off against Davenport University. Davenport, who was the runner-up at the ACHA D3 National Tournament, would be a tough test for the Rebels. Once again, Ole Miss came out strong with an immediate first period goal by Cody Fullinwider. With just twenty-three seconds left in the first, Davenport tied the game up at 1-1. The Rebels came out strong in the second period with goals from Leo Cuzin and Matt Obstarczyk. Ole Miss closed off Davenport in the third period with a goal from Cameron Cook and an empty net goal to make it a final of 5-2. Josh Hukill played outstanding, saving 51 out of 53 shots.
The last team that the Rebels would face this weekend was Grand Valley State. Cameron Cook opened up the scoring just two minutes into the game. After that, it was a silent period for both teams. With just 40 seconds into the second, Cody Fullinwider scored to make it 2-0. After a Grand Valley State goal, Cook responded with another goal, along with a goal from Tyler Lesage. Back and forth action occurred in the third period, but it was the Rebels who overpowered their opponent. Dan Warnecke did the scoring for the Rebels in the third with two goals and made the final 6-4.
With the Rebels going 2-1 in Michigan, they will face the University of Miami (9-0-1) next week in Olive Branch, Miss. Friday’s puck drop is at 9:15pm and Saturday is at 4:15pm.
